New London — The cause of a fire that displaced multiple people from the Crocker House on Saturday appears to have originated between two floors, New London Fire Marshal David Heiney said Monday.
The fire at 35 Union St. badly damaged four apartments on the south side of the building and left adjacent units with smoke and water damage. Heiney said officials from the city's building department were scheduled to meet with the property manager on Monday to assess the damage and determine how long residents might be displaced.
Heiney said the building is code compliant and does have sprinklers, but the fire was contained in the floor and did not activate the sprinkler systems.
While tenants from about 40 units were not allowed back in on the night of the fire, Heiney said there were about 10 units that are expected to need remediation before people will be allowed back in. The Red Cross and management from the Crocker House were assisting the relocation process, Heiney said.
Four people were taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation.
